Public Speaking for Daily Life

For Middle Schoolers

Middle School [6th - 8th grades/ages 11 - 14]

Public Speaking in Daily Life is a unique course of study. In this course of study students discover how they innately prefer to orally communicate with others and how to conscientiously alter their way of communicating to be better understood by those listening to them.

Public speaking happens every time we speak to one or more people. This means every time we wish to find out how someone is doing, meet someone new or exchange ideas and or information we are speaking publicly. But there are biological differences that can make oral communication a challenge. For example, there are those who orally communicate in few words while others say lots of words that sound disorganized.

Part 1:

In Part 1 of this two-part course the teacher guides the students as they discover foundational concepts of “speaking to be understood.” Concepts studied include:

· Identifying everyday “open” and “closed” type questions and how to answer them

· Identifying “sticky” words that make it difficult to reply to a question

· Listening

· How to organize a reply

· How to share your perspectives

On the last day of class, parents will be invited to attend to hear the students review the concepts they have learned, listen to the students answer impromptu questions and receive feedback, and be provided an opportunity to ask questions.
