Harmony Course Overview

The Harmony course is designed to help second graders strengthen their writing skills through structured lessons that emphasize outlining, note-taking, and sentence development. With a focus on building strong writing habits, students will work on identifying key information, organizing their thoughts, and refining their sentence structure. As they progress through the course, they will gain confidence in writing by engaging in guided exercises that develop critical thinking and composition skills. Each lesson incorporates vocabulary building and grammar instruction, ensuring that students not only improve their writing but also expand their language proficiency.

A Structured, Progressive Curriculum

The Harmony course consists of eight modules, each thoughtfully designed to build upon previously learned skills. Students will develop a strong foundation in writing by practicing key techniques step by step. Each module is broken down into four lessons, allowing students to absorb new concepts at a steady pace. Here is an overview of what students will learn throughout the course:

  • Module 1: Identifying the Main Idea
Students will learn how to pinpoint the central idea of a text, which will help them improve comprehension and set the stage for organized writing.
  • Module 2: Identifying the Main Idea & Focused Facts
This module expands on identifying the main idea by teaching students how to find and focus on key facts within a passage.
  • Module 3: Introduction to Outline of Focused Facts (OFF)
Students will be introduced to a structured outlining method that helps them organize key details before they start writing.
  • Module 4: Outline of Focused Facts (OFF)
Building on the previous module, students will refine their outlining techniques, learning how to arrange facts in a logical order to support their writing.
  • Module 5: Story Outline
This module introduces students to outlining narrative structures, helping them organize their ideas for storytelling.
  • Module 6: Introduction to Summarizing
Students will begin practicing how to summarize texts by identifying the most important information and condensing it into a clear and concise format.
  • Module 7: Writing from Pictures
This module fosters creativity by having students use images as prompts for their writing, helping them develop descriptive and narrative skills.
  • Module 8: Summarizing
The final module reinforces summarization techniques, enabling students to confidently condense information while maintaining clarity and coherence.
