Sharing a Personal Experience

Middle School : Ages 11-14

Part I: Well-shared personal experiences are at the heart of powerful and memorable interviews and presentations. Personal experiences are unique in they have the power to authentically connect people, ideas, and information. In Part 1 of this two-part Public Speaking Course students will learn the difference between “telling” listeners something and “sharing” the same information. Teachers will guide the students as they discover how to put together a well-shared personal experience. This is NOT a writing-based approach.  Students will study the three parts of an orally shared personal experience and the power of words. On the last day of class, parents will be invited to hear the students review the concepts they learned and listen to the students participate in an impromptu chain story showcase.

Part II: Continuing from Sharing a Personal Experience Part 1, students will start with a review of concepts from Part 1.  In this Public Speaking Course students will tackle more advanced concepts such as transitions, vocal variety, and body language.  The course will culminate with the students answering one of the most important interview questions used in interviews today. On the last day of class, parents will be invited to hear the students review the concepts they learned and listen to the students answer the interview question. Part I must be completed prior to taking Part II.
