Part I: Oral communication is a large part of daily life, from answering questions to taking part in discussions. Great oral communicators have developed their active listening skills and seek to speak to be understood. In Part 1 of this two-part Public Speaking Course the teachers will guide the students as they discover foundational concepts of “speaking to be understood” when answering questions from daily life. Concepts studied will include perspective, words, and scope. On the last day of class, parents will be invited to attend to hear the students review the concepts they have learned and listen to the students answer impromptu questions.
Part II: Continuing from Public Speaking for Daily Life Part 1, this Public Speaking Course will begin with a review of the concepts from Part 1. Next, we will focus on adding new concepts such as referencing what the previous speaker said, vocal variety and the use of verbal “backdoors” as we discover how to respectfully participate in a discussion. On the last day of class, parents will be invited to hear the students review what they have learned and demonstrate an impromptu class discussion. Part I must be completed prior to taking Part II. Note: There is no Part II for Grade Levels 3-4.
