In a world where information moves faster than ever, helping students think deeply is essential. A recent article from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), “Why and How Should We Teach Critical Thinking”, explores why this skill matters and how educators can nurture it.

The article highlights an important truth: in a world of instant information and artificial intelligence, students must learn how to think for themselves. Referencing a Time Magazine story on the decline of critical thinking skills, the author reminds us that when students do not learn to analyze, question, and reason, they can easily be influenced by others’ opinions instead of developing their own.

So how do we teach students to think critically? It begins with curiosity and modeling thoughtful engagement. When adults ask open-ended questions, listen carefully, and consider multiple viewpoints, students learn to do the same. Reading and discussing high-quality literature is another way to encourage deep thinking. Through stories, students learn to make predictions, explore motivations, and connect ideas.

Writing is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen critical thinking. When students learn to identify key ideas, organize their thoughts, and express them clearly, they develop not only stronger writing skills but also a clearer understanding of how to reason and communicate effectively.

At Writing Symphony, our curriculum is designed to help students do exactly that. Each level builds on a foundation of analysis, structure, and creativity. Students learn to outline, summarize, and present information in their own words, which deepens comprehension and encourages independent thought. Our goal is to help every student grow as both a writer and a thinker.

As IEW founder Andrew Pudewa says, “Technology will atrophy the skill it replaces.” That is why teaching students to think critically and write thoughtfully is one of the most important skills we can give them for life.
